Andato in onda per vent’anni (prima puntata il 3 febbraio del 1957), dopo un inizio difficoltoso Carosello si impose nella tv di quello che oggi chiameremmo access prime time, tanto che la sua ultima puntata, condotta da Raffaella Carrà e andata in onda il il primo gennaio 1977, venne seguita da 19 milioni di telespettatori.
Il programma venne sospeso solo in occasione dell’assassinio di John Fitzgerald Kennedy e della strage di Piazza Fontana (oltre che ogni venerdì santo), e ha visto la partecipazione di attori e registi come Sergio Leone, Totò, Gillo Pontecorvo, Eduardo De Filippo, Ermanno Olmi, Vittorio Gassman, Dario Fo, e Mina.
